Puri, Konark, Bhubaneswar, Chilika
Odisha’s golden triangle is one of the richest temple circuits in India. Bhubaneswar, the “temple city”, still has hundreds of shrines, from the Lingaraja to the small and perfect Mukteshwar, and the Jain caves of Udayagiri and Khandagiri on the edge of town.
Puri is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimages, home to the Jagannath temple and its Rath Yatra, when the deities are drawn through the streets on giant chariots. Along the coast, the Sun Temple at Konark, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is carved as a stone chariot with twenty-four wheels.
Chilika, Asia’s largest brackish-water lagoon, is known for Irrawaddy dolphins and the migratory birds that winter there, while the villages of Raghurajpur and Pipili keep the state’s painting and appliqué traditions.
