Glide across Dal Lake in a hand-paddled shikara as the mist lifts. Early risers can reach the floating vegetable market, where growers trade from their boats among the lake's floating gardens.
Stay aboard a carved cedar houseboat, a tradition that goes back to the British era. Evenings are for the veranda, kahwa, and traders who come alongside by boat.
Two of the valley's most revered places: the white marble Hazratbal shrine on the lake's edge, and the Shankaracharya Temple on the hill above the city.
Kashmir's celebrated multi-course meal, cooked by a waza and traditionally shared from one large plate. Look for rista, rogan josh and gushtaba. Vegetarian dishes such as nadru yakhni are part of the tradition too.
Watch the valley's crafts being made: Kani shawls woven with small wooden bobbins in Kanihama, fine pashmina, and hand-painted papier-mâché in the workshops of old Srinagar.
On the plateau at Pampore, purple crocus flowers are picked by hand for one of the world's most prized spices. Outside the harvest, stop at a local shop to buy and taste.
Ride one of the world's highest cable cars from the meadow towards Apharwat, with snow on top for much of the year. Book tickets well ahead in peak season.

About Jammu & Kashmir
Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Katra
Kashmir is the classic Indian holiday: a houseboat night on Dal Lake, a shikara ride past the floating markets, and the Mughal gardens of Nishat and Shalimar laid out on the hillside above Srinagar.
From Srinagar the valley opens three ways. Gulmarg is a meadow ringed by forest with one of the highest cable cars in the world; Pahalgam follows the Lidder river to Betaab and Aru valleys; and Sonmarg, the “meadow of gold”, sits below the Thajiwas glacier on the road to Ladakh.
In Jammu, Katra is the base for the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, one of the most visited shrines in India, reached on foot, by pony or by helicopter.
