Madhya Pradesh, the heart of India, has more tiger reserves than any other state. Bandhavgarh has one of the highest densities of tigers in the country, Kanha’s sal forests and meadows inspired The Jungle Book, and Pench and Satpura round out the circuit.
Khajuraho’s temples, built by the Chandela kings a thousand years ago and a UNESCO World Heritage site, are covered in some of the finest sculpture in India. Near Jabalpur, the Narmada runs between marble cliffs at Bhedaghat, best seen by boat on a moonlit night.
The state also has the Buddhist stupa at Sanchi, the fort of Gwalior, Orchha on the Betwa and the jyotirlingas of Ujjain and Omkareshwar.
