Mumbai, Ajanta, Ellora, Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar
Maharashtra starts in Mumbai: the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, the Victorian Gothic of the old fort district and a ferry ride to the Elephanta caves.
Inland, near Aurangabad, the caves of Ajanta and Ellora are among the great achievements of Indian art. Ajanta’s Buddhist murals date back two thousand years, and at Ellora the Kailasa temple was carved down from a single rock. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The Western Ghats give the state its weekend hill stations, Lonavala and Mahabaleshwar, green and full of waterfalls in the monsoon, and the pilgrimage towns of Shirdi and Nashik are within a day’s drive of Mumbai.
