Coorg, Mangalore, Mysore, Chikmagalur, Hampi
Karnataka holds the royal city of Mysore, whose palace is lit by nearly a hundred thousand bulbs on Sunday evenings and during the Dasara festival, and Srirangapatna, Tipu Sultan’s island fortress, on the road from Bengaluru.
The Western Ghats give the state its coffee country. Coorg and Chikmagalur are estates and misty hills, with plantation stays, waterfalls and the Tibetan settlement at Bylakuppe; Kabini and Nagarhole are among the best places in India to see wild elephant and leopard.
In the north, Hampi, the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara empire, is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of temples and boulders, with Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal nearby. The coast around Mangalore and Gokarna has temples and quiet beaches.
